Items can be found by exploring zones and appear in your backpack.

If you die, all items in your backpack will be dropped. Your backpack can be retrieved, and does not disappear over time or if you log out. However you can only have 1 dropped backpack at a time, so if you die a 2nd time before retrieving it, your original backpack will be lost. So if you go to retrieve your backpack you should always make sure to at least have enough food/water values to revive once, and if possible have a friend help you retrieve it (if necessary).

Almost all items can be salvaged into resources in your camp, regardless of item type, although they must be at least average quality or higher (not poor / expired). Legendary quality items are the most notable exceptions.

While not items and not obtainable through exploring zones, clothing also offers stats and can be used to change how your character looks.

When selected, all items will be shown in the players hand, even if it's not a weapon.

These items have no attack stats, but instead are used to recover thirst/hunger gauges, as well as potentially offer various boosts. Boosts given by food are only applied when eaten at a campfire, and last until the next time you visit a campfire of more than 20 fuel. These have icons with a blue background. Note that upon logoff (or disconnect) these bonuses will change to one of normal quality. If food has a recipe, it can be crafted on the kitchen stove.

All Boosts are on "[Use]" unless otherwise stated.

• Eat / drink animations depend on whether the "food" or "water" stat are higher respectively. While this usually behaves as expected, it can cause the wrong animation to play for some food, such as "drinking" potatoes, leeks, and melons (since they give more water than food) and "eating" hot chocolate (since it gives almost no water but does give food).

These are generally resource-giving items, or items that just don't fall in another category.

Resource items

These have no practical use other than being salvaged into resources, but some give a much larger amount of resources than usual when salvaged to make up for their otherwise uselessness. Unlike other items, these have no quality, which also means they are always salvageable. They also do not degrade when equipped. These almost always have icons with a cyan background.
