Dye

Dye is a rare item that can be found while salvaging food items to your backpack (it won't appear when salvaging to your home stock). It can be used to change the color of one clothing item, which can be done by opening your profile and dragging the vial onto the small rectangle of clothing selection corresponding to the piece you intend to dye. Note that the effect of dyes depends on the type of the clothing piece (some garments can only pick up a slight tint, while others will turn to the exact color). Many clothing pieces can't be dyed at all. If you attempt to dye a piece that doesn't accept custom colors, you will keep your dye, otherwise it is consumed and the piece becomes tinted or colored.

The color of a dye is reflected in the color its name is cast in - and also the appearance of the vial, but it isn't spelled out otherwise.

Unneeded dyes can be salvaged for toxic water.

You can remove the custom color from dyed clothing by using any (clean, dirty or toxic) water bottle of any quality (but not juices or other drinks) on it. After such washing the color reverts to the default.

Harvesting a dye from the salvage list expends 10 thirst.

You can test what a dye looks like on a specific clothing item (as well as check if the clothing can be dyed) by using the fan-made dressroom.

A dye having fewer sources isn't necessarily less prevalent because the abundance of those sources is also a factor.

Several types of dye can be obtained from infected meat. You can find infected meat in loot bags anywhere, but the only way to do it is to fight while severely hungry (20% nourishment or less). Note that such hunger cuts your resistance in half, so you become easy to knock out, and you will need another player to revive you if that happens.

Note: that some items can give more than 1 color of dye. The color codes listed below use the color of the dye's text to have a consistent base.

The color value listed is found by taking a png snapshot (to preserve color values), and then sampling the color of the horizontal line on the "e" (as this is the only spot not darkened slightly by the background bleed darkening it). Only add values to the table that are taken in this way.
