Many of the "Special" type infected types also have a boss form, introduced in beta v0.52 and beta v0.54 , which can resemble a mutant except without the floating skulls mutants emit. These bosses have deadly attacks and an extremely large amount of HP.

Note: the Peruvian is not a boss. It's just an extra powerful infected with special behavior, loot, and high attributes.

Bosses spawn at a random location out of the ones they can occur in - or in the vicinity of those. All these spaces are marked by the presence of the normal legendary-rank infected. The legendary infected are distinguished by an orange diode to the left of their health bar, and are the toughest among its respective kinds, but also offer more generous loot than their weaker counterparts.

There can be at most one boss in a zone instance. A new boss spawns 3 hours after the the time of the inception (not of killing) of its predecessor in the zone.

Vacating a zone makes the boss respawn, so this happens during the bidiurnal reboots as well.

If not killed and if the zone isn't vacated, a boss will keep operating indefinitely and prevent the spawning of another boss in the same zone instance (but not other instances of the same zone). There is no despawning of an active boss.

Drops[]

Each boss type will only drop valuable loot (often including Experience experience and Reputation reputation, survivor gear parts, pumpkin currency) once a week. You can kill more of them, but the subsequent ones will only drop skimpy loot (or none at all), like in the case of minibosses. Boss kill counts reset on Thursday 0 UTC (12am UTC), and you unlike some types of resets, it just comes into force immediately. After that point you can obtain valuable loot from each of the bosses again.

To receive the loot from a particular boss when you're near - you need to hit it at least once (it can be with ranged weapons too, so think of shooting the difficult boss then waiting),

Instead of hitting the boss yourself you can either: 1. aggravate the boss with a provocation skill or 2. grant some effects to the players hitting or provoking the boss (that is, you can heal them or use "Encouragements" on them and so on). If, after becoming eligible for the loot you go away too far (if you can light a bonfire then you are too far), then you have to regain your eligibility for the loot. Sometimes when you're lagged while the bag deploys, you won't receive the bag, but you will if you hunt boss again that week. If you're knocked out when the bag deploys, you won't receive it and can hunt the boss again that week. If your game crashes as you're opening your loot bag, you won't get another bag that week.

Locations[]

Visit the page for each boss for potential spawn locations and strategies. It appears bosses can appear in any spawn area that spawns infecteds with a legendary infected level[Confirm] (which includes secret passages as well as other locations around the map).

  • /chat boss is an in-game chat room where people say the location of a boss when they see one.
  • You can also use the fan-made Fewfre tracker to keep track of the bosses you've killed and zone reset time.

Summons 5 unstables or a few basic infected to attack players. Throws a flaming gas bottle that bursts and sets targets aflame in a 3m radius. 1. If you get in the range of the exploding unstables, that will immobilize you in a vulnerable state and douse you with toxicity. It is lethal in combination with the incineration from the hurled gas bottle. So avoid this or separate till your toxified status wanes (observe your top-right corner of the screen for the status information).
2. Do not use stunning on this boss. Thanks to that, if you approach it to fight it hand-to-hand, it will keep flinging its arm without being able to use any of the other abilities (summoning or hurling the flaming gas bottle), so it becomes much faster and safer to kill.
3. You may wish to create a dedicated outfit with fire and toxic resistance and also some means of physical protection (dodging, shields and physical resistance) to combat this specific boss. Resillience and health-restoration systems (regeneration and healing, including vampirism) will help too.
4. Adjust your programmable passive skills, "Sturdy" is especially recommended for 30% general resistance.
5. Items like the modern sculputure, watering can, a chucky doll may come in handy

Vomits and deals elemental damage (fire, toxicity, electricity, cold) in a 5m radius. A circle appears around the boss's feet when he's about to discharge the vomit - that circle also coarsely indicates the range. Move out of that circle if you don't have protection against all the elements. After the discharge approach again. Avoid clustering with other players, particularly if they fail to clear the circle, because electricity may spread the effects from them to you if you're too near and knock out throngs of players.

Crawler

Summons regular crawlers to protect itself (which are worth no experience when killed). Inflicts a painful bite at a range of a molotov throw. Use a board game to blind the boss and its minions continually, thin out their numbers with mines and use the "Focus" and "Stance:defense" skills, particularly if you're alone.

Avenger

Becomes irate the more damage it takes (3 stages). In the latter stages gets attracted to players, so if you need to lead him, put him in the second stage - about half of the health off. But beware: he will never chase, stop for nor hit infected so you can be running from him alone sometimes if you overdo it - and he's as fast as you are. Use board games to blind him when he's irate.

Unstable

Counterattacks with fire and toxicity If the toxic and fire pose a threat or hindrance, consider enabling 'sturdy' or just disengaging. Modern sculptures, chucky dolls, board games and will help you. The boss is highly mobile, so guide him to an empty spot before you begin.
Monster42
Protector
South Fallon icon
Highway 99
Has a flock of minions escorting him who he resummons unless if you make them perish (possibly by flammability, but more research is due).

Inflicts damage when he strikes with his shield.

It's not yet certain how to get rid of the flock of minions, but you can always incapacitate them with board games. Pay attention to the shield hits - If you lose too much health, disengage, regain health and continue wearing him down. You can use item-based shields (umbrellas, octopi) or the "Focus" and "Stance:defense" skills too.
